Wandering Stick began life as a member of an alternative trade organization with the vision of providing honorable jobs for Mexicans in Mexico, allowing them to remain in their home communities by earning living wages. Because of shifting needs within the larger organization, however, the leather business was put on hold until the project's Creative Director, David Hernandez, purchased the business and restarted production of the existing designs along with new work.

Designs continue to be largely inspired by the complex beauty and richness of the Mexican culture and landscape, although influences also include leatherwork of the American West, Asian printmaking and rare instances of contemporary international art. Although a percentage of our current belt inventory was created in Mexico by the original artisans, all new Wandering Stick work is handcrafted in the U.S. by David and other artisans in their own small shops.
